In Memoriam: Edward FitzGerald--March 31, 1809 to June 14, 1883

Following are the last two quatrains of the Second Edition of Edward FitzGerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Quatrain CIX

But see! The rising Moon of Heav'n again--
Looks for us, Sweet-heart, through the quivering Plane:
How oft hereafter rising will she look
Among those leaves--for one of us in vain!

Quatrain CX

And when Yourself with silver Foot shall pass
Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,
And to your joyous errand reach the spot
Where I made One--turn down an empty Glass!
