A Minute Meditation

No. 63

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe...

-- John Muir --
from John Muir: In His Own Words

There's an Eastern flavor to this comment, isn't there?

Glad you liked it. I just recently started reading John Muir, so this is new to me also.

  2. yes, absolutely... it fits in, Zen-like, with "Nirvana is right here, before our eyes." by Hakuin... it seems to me, anyway... Muir's description of climbing a big Douglas fir during a storm and swinging around in the branches at the top in the high wind and rain and having what one might call an out of body experience was one of the incidents i remember; there are many like that, though.... He was as in tune with the wild as anyone ever has been...

    1. Mudpuddle,

As I mentioned earlier, I'm just getting acquainted with John Muir, so I haven't encountered that incident yet. But it sounds interesting, and I'm looking forward to reading about that incident.

  3. I like this so much, Fred - fits in with what I'm feeling today. Coincidence? There are no coincidences.

    1. Yvette,

The Taoists would say that there is a pattern in events and that to achieve our goals we must find that Way.

I'm generally much of a materialist and find it hard to see things as other than isolated but still interacting with the environment. However, every once in a while I get a glimpse of something else.

I cannot imagine anything that is not connected with something else. And so it goes.
